Her educational background includes an MFA in Interior Architecture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a BA in Studio Art from Florida State University. Her creative scholarship investigates the spatial identity of materials and interior artifacts, researching layered connections among culture, the history of interiors, hand and digital craft practices, space, and place.

Among Dean’s published works are the book chapters “Dug by the Devil: Space, Culture, + Material Identity,” in Public Interiority: Politics and Programs, and “Mixed Not Stirred: Diverging Outside the Confines of Racial and Disciplinary Boxes of Identification,” in UpKeep, Repair, and Maintenance in Adaptive Interiors. She was awarded a research and development grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (2021) for her project Perceptions of Misconceptions. Her work has recently been exhibited at Brew House Arts and Contemporary Craft’s International Fiber Exhibition (2025), the American Association of Woodturners Gallery of Wood Art (2025), and the Sandra J. Blain Gallery at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (2024).

Industrialization—and subsequently globalized post-modernity—obscured this relationship, creating spatial logics that now impede the renewable energy transition.

While the technical capacity for a global transition exists, modern distributed generation and storage technologies often conflict with ingrained spatial, cultural, and urban patterns. Contemporary urbanism may prioritize energy conservation, but it still fails to adapt to—let alone celebrate—the material, spatial, and temporal dimensions of renewable energy. Merely forcing new energy logics into old spatial frameworks is a missed opportunity to foster a more just transition and restore a legible connection between cities and the energy that sustains them.

Drawing on documentation of community-owned distributed energy resources in Scotland built since 2009, this talk explores how these localized infrastructures reveal new ways to integrate energy into the built environment. The presentation is structured in three parts:

A brief historical reflection on urbanism across past energy regimes

An analysis of the spatial and material logics of Scottish community energy projects

Early design proposals applying these logics toward a 21st-century energy urbanism
