Title: "Segmental Retaining Walls Design and Application"

Abstract
The use of dry stacked Segmental Retaining Walls (SRW) has increased dramatically over the last several years as the demand for useable space as exceeded the supply of easily developable land. SRW’s have been shown to be a cost effective way of providing useable space at an affordable cost. The challenges that civil design firms face is knowing when SRW’s are applicable and when site conditions warrant more detailed site investigation to insure the proper and safe use of these systems. This presentation will focus on the applications for SRW’s and the specific site and design criteria that must be taken in account when considering the proper use of these systems.

Jim Martin is president of RidgeRock Retaining Walls Inc. in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received a BS in civil engineering from UT and an MBA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has over 30 years of experience in geosynthetic reinforced soil product design and development and is the holder of 6 US and international patents for segmental retaining wall systems.
