Title: "Micromechanical Analysis of Materials with Complex Microstructures: Automated Modeling and Deep Learning Algorithms."
Soheil Soghrati is an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at Ohio State University (OSU).
Abstract
Soghrati will present a set of advanced algorithms for the automated modeling of materials with complex microstructures, including various composites and biomaterials. The proposed framework relies on a virtual microstructure reconstruction technique inspired by computer animation algorithms to synthesize a realistic microstructural model. A non-iterative mesh generation algorithm, coined Conforming to Interface Structured Adaptive Mesh Generation (CISAMR), is then employed to build a high-fidelity Finite Element (FE) model. Both algorithms are fully integrated and implemented in parallel to automate the modelling process. In this talk, he will present new algorithmic aspects pertaining to both methods, including the use of a combination of animation-inspired virtual packing and FE-based simulation for synthesizing composite material microstructures with very high volume fractions (e.g., chopped fiber composites). The CISAMR algorithm is also expanded to enable modeling problems with sharp edges/corners, including polycrystalline materials. Finally, he also combines the algorithms discussed above with deep learning techniques such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) to enhance the computational design process. Several application problems are presented, including the simulation of the failure response of fiber-reinforced and particulate composites, corrosion-assisted failure response of high-pressure gas pipes, and simulating damage (injury) in human vertebra.
Bio
Soghrati earned his PhD in Structural Engineering with a Minor in Computational Science in Engineering from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2013. He immediately joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at OSU as an Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Since January 2015, he has also been one of the steering board faculty members of the OSU’s Simulation Innovation and Modeling Center (SIMCenter). In June 2019, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure at OSU. Soghrati’s research interests lay in the area of computational solid mechanics, with focus on developing advanced microstructure reconstruction, mesh generation, and deep learning algorithms for the automated modeling and computational design of materials with complex microstructures. He has established the Automated Computational Mechanics Laboratory (ACML) at OSU. Current projects in ACML are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Honda R&D Americas, Ford, and Institute for Materials Research.
