Checkerboard Chat: Do Sports Build Character?

Do Sports Build Character? with Dr. Jedediah Blanton
Presented by Nationwide

What is it about youth sport that leads to character development? How can coaches, parents, and administrators enhance the youth sport experience to fully leverage all the benefits that this extracurricular can provide? Using research from adolescent development, social psychology, and sport psychology, Dr. Jedediah Blanton will discuss the mechanisms within sport that can help, and those that can hurt, youth’s personal growth and social development.

Dr. Blanton is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Kinesiology, Recreation, and Sport Studies. He teaches classes on Sport and Exercise Psychology, and focuses his research on positive adolescent development through high school sport. He was worked for the Institute for the Study of Youth Sport at Michigan State University and the Michigan High School Athletic Association to produce research and evidence-based curriculum for team captains’ leadership development.
