Complex Mixed Models in R

Although SAS has traditionally been used for both mixed model analysis of variance and hierarchal linear models, the R program can also be used to perform this task. This course will discuss how to adequately convert SAS mixed models into the R language for use in the lme4 and glmmTMB packages. Theoretical concepts necessary to understand the mixed model equation development in SAS and R will be discussed along with how to practically apply these concepts to mixed model development in R code. A traditional approach to mixed models in R using lme4 will be addressed followed by presenting the new glmmTMB package. Advantages and disadvantages of each method and procedure will be discussed. Examples utilizing mixed model analysis of variance and hierarchal linear models will be presented. Prerequisite knowledge of mixed models in SAS or R is required.
