Day of the Dead will be observed Friday, October 27th in the Jack E. Reese Galleria from 9 AM – 2 PM. Come visit the ofrendas the students have crafted for the celebration at the day-long event. While many cultures tend to focus on the grief and loss of loved ones, Hispanic cultures set aside time to celebrate loved ones who have died.  This observance is done with constructing ofrendas /alters dedicated to those people. Traditional items for the ofrenda include banners made with brightly colored tissue paper, marigold flowers, sugar skulls, and special foods that were favorites of the deceased. Día de Lis Muertos can be celebrated by anyone, regardless of heritage. By doing so, may we realize we are all human and be enriched by sharing differing cultural traditions. UT Libraries Diversity Committee, the Dept of World Languages and Cultures and HoLa Hora Latina will co-sponsor the event. HoLa Hora Latina will have Day of the Dead items for sale to raise money to sponsor the event costs and prizes. The event is also a contest and everyone who wants to can vote using our QR code provided at each table and info table.
