DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Malkit Shoshan will draw on two decades of de
sign research and practice to discuss how\, through their projects\, FAST
engages with complex challenges facing conflict-affected regions\, such as
displacement\, spatial violence\, and the preservation of cultural herita
ge and knowledge\, utilizing collaborative and cross-disciplinary methods.
\n\n \n\nFAST's design approach involves working closely with communities
and institutions to foster systemic change\, improve living conditions\,
and promote environmental sustainability. Their diverse projects have cont
ributed to transformative processes\, influencing UN resolutions and inter
national policies\, while addressing the unique challenges faced by intern
ally displaced communities. \n\n \n\nThe presentation will highlight FAST'
s impactful projects\, including collaborations with internally displaced
communities\, UN agencies\, and international policymakers. Shoshan will a
lso delve into FAST's current focus on climate and conflict-induced migrat
ion\, examining how these trends are reshaping demographics\, landscapes a
nd typologies of human habitation. \n\n \n\nThrough case studies and analy
sis\, this lecture will explore how architecture\, urban planning\, and de
sign thinking can be employed to develop spatial strategies that support a
ffected communities and institutions\, particularly in the Sahel region. B
y viewing displacement both as a challenge and an opportunity\, we can rei
magine future habitation and reshape the discipline of spatial design.
