Fall Chem501 Seminar
UT Host: Dr. Constance Bailey
Speaker: Dr. Brian Bachmann
Professor of Chemistry
Title: “From Cave to Bedside: Natural Product Discovery for Precision Medicine”
Abstract: In this seminar I will describe methods to assess the activity of secondary metabolites within metabolomes prior to their isolation. In particular, I will discuss the development and application of new methods to perform bioactive small molecule discovery using patient-derived cell preparations containing both tumor and functional immune cells from multiple patients. These methods bypass the traditional lead discovery processes using immortalized cell lines and aim to provide lead compounds for chemo and immuno-oncology campaigns with an unprecedented depth of preclinical characterization.
Bio: Brian Bachmann is a Professor of Chemistry and Principal Investigator of the Laboratory for Biosynthetic Studies, a multidisciplinary group working on the construction and deconstruction of biosynthetic pathways and the discovery of their products. Prior to arriving at Vanderbilt University, Professor Bachmann was Director of Chemistry at Ecopia Biosciences, a natural product-based drug discovery company in Montreal, Quebec. Professor Bachmann has served as a scientific consultant for multiple corporations, and as a Board of Directors member. He holds several U.S. and international publications and patents.
