Abstract: In this talk I will introduce my career path from graduate school to R&D Product Developer for Tesa Tape, one of the largest tape manufacturers in the world. I will introduce the technical aspects of tape, the types of products we make, and what smart phones and skyscraper windows have in common (. . . It’s tape). I will explore the product development process through concept, research and development, to production trials and product launch. Finally, I will comment on how the skills you cultivate as a graduate student are transferrable into industry.
Biography: Dr. Emily Morin earned her Bachelor’s degree in 2012 and PhD in 2017 in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Tennessee. Under the guidance of Dr. Wei He, her dissertation research focused on developing nanostructured interfaces for neural devices using hydrogel particles. She has been awarded several achievements including 2 fellowships, the Program for Excellence and Equity in Research fellowship, the National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship honorable mention, and 2 Society for Biomaterials conference presentation awards. Since graduation she has been working in Research & Development for a tape manufacturing company as a Product Developer. Her responsibilities include developing new products for market, serving as the chemical hygiene officer, and her personal favorite, leading the 5S initiative for efficient and safe lab spaces.
