God in the Flesh: Witchcraft, Healing, and Religioust Conflict in the Republic of Benin, West Africa

What happens when an 18-year-old woman in Benin, West Africa, declares that she is the incarnation of God and vows to destroy all other religions? In his presentation, Professor Falen examines the case of Parfaite, founder of an independent church known for its success in treating witchcraft illness. Parfaite condemns traditional Vodun priests and Catholic priests as witches who she claims conspire to attack her. In using social media to spread her message about witchcraft and propagate conspiracies, Parfaite draws upon both traditional and modern sensibilities to unsettle notions of religion and truth.
