Universities are complex institutions with diverse stakeholders, distinct structural hierarchies, and multiple criteria for success. Those interested in pursuing careers in academia, and even those who have been associated with educational institutions for many years, often have a limited understanding of the organization, functions and resource acquisition mechanisms that are employed at universities.

The objective of this presentation is to provide a high-level overview of university functioning, to provide insights that might assist those beginning their academic careers. My remarks are based on many years of involvement in shared governance, interactions with a plethora of university leaders at multiple levels, and experience across the research, education and service activities of comprehensive universities. In addition to summarizing modes of organization and financing, I will remark on how the structural aspects of UT have impacted and constrained the capability of the institution historically, elaborate some success stories, and encourage a formal evaluation approach to university governance and management.
