Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Meeting

The UT Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) meets once a month to review registrations and discuss compliance issues involving biological safety on campus.

The IBC is responsible for the review and approval of research protocols involving:

  • Recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules
  • Biological agents (bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and prions)
  • Acute toxins of biological origin
  • Human or nonhuman primate blood, blood products, tissues, secretions, excretions, or cell lines*
  • Venomous animals
  • Poisonous plants
  • Novel nanoparticles
  • Diagnostic specimens or environmental samples

* Research use of all agents infectious to humans must be registered with the IBC. Agents infectious to animals or plants must be registered with the IBC if federal agency permits are required for the possession or use of these agents.

This meeting is open to the public.

Amendments, MTAs, and New Registrations must be submitted by the first business day of the month to be considered by IBC and they must be submitted via the IBC iMedRIS module. (For more information click here). Submission and prior approval of IBC protocols does not mean future approval, and to please allow ample time for an appropriate risk assessment to be performed by the committee.
