About this Event
McClung Tower, 1115 Volunteer Boulevard, Knoxville, TN 37996
Dr. Xabier Granja (University of Alabama) will be giving a talk on his work on a project developed during the 2024 Google Summer of Code, called renAIssance. For the project, Dr. Granja worked alongside an international team of software engineering students to develop a tool that can digitize 16th- and 17th-century Spanish print texts using machine learning techniques and optical character recognition (OCR). A functional end user tool does not currently exist, so it stands to make a significant contribution to the field, with the aim of developing a broadened, diversified, and more accessible digital archive for historical research in the Humanities. Dr. Granja will also be discussing the applications of generative Artificial Intelligence in the classroom, as a tool to help students contextualize historical readings and engage with the archive, as these are both teaching endeavors for which there are scant pedagogical resources.
