Architect with honorable mention from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) (1996), and a master's degree in Sciences and Development of Real Estate Projects from Columbia University, New York (1998).
In 1996 he founded JSa, a leading architectural practice in the renewal of Mexico City, focused on comprehensive architectural interventions that transcend their contemporary context, and reinterpret the city’s heritage to contribute towards a continuos reconversion, rehabilitation and restoration of the urban fabric.
Since then, and throughout the past three decades, JSa’s practice has designed and built over 180 projects in Mexico, South America and Europe. Encompassing five cross-complementary axes around: the recovery of heritage and promotion of culture; the conception of unique hospitality experiences; the design of versatile community and workspaces; the integration and development of sustainable solutions; and the continuous exploration of housing as the foundation of the urban ecosystem.
Awarded with more than 120 national and international awards, some of his accolades include: the Golden Lion of the Venice Architecture Biennale (2006), the Best New Global Design Citation by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design (2007), the First International Prize of the Pan-American Architecture Biennial of Quito (2012), the Gold Medal of the National Architecture Biennial of Mexico (2020), and the Housing Award of the American Institute of Architects (2022).
In 2008 he was elected Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA); in 2009 he became a member of the National Endowment for Culture and Arts of Mexico; and in 2014, he was invited to head the Federico E. Mariscal Lecture at the School of Architecture of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Since 2011 he is a member of the National Academy of Architecture of Mexico, and in 2023 he was named Emeritus Academician of the same institution in recognition of his prominent contributions to the practice.
