About this Event
The R/18 Collective focuses on how the 18th-century repertoire bears on our contemporary moment. Join us for an on-line roundtable to explore these questions around Against the Grain Theatre and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s highly acclaimed production of Messiah/Complex, a Covid-era video production of The Messiah like you have never seen before. With urgency and beauty, Against the Grain has altered our understanding of the present and its relation to the past so as to imagine the future otherwise. The conversation features co-directors Renaltta Arluk, director of Indigenous Arts at the Banff Center, and Joel Ivany, Artistic Director of Against The Grain. Other panelists include members of the company, Bridget Orr, Robbie Robertson, Ellen Lockhart, and surprise guests we can't yet mention. Messiah/Complex transforms Handel’s oratorio into a complex meditation on Indigenous communities’ situated knowledge and critique.
Participants will have access to the now unlisted video of Messiah/Complex. Please register now, as we expect this to be a very full session! March 23, 4:00-5:30 PM eastern.
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing login information for the meeting. Registration includes access to Messiah/Complex for the week before the event until March 24.
