Janelle Shane is an artificial intelligence researcher and writer. Shane is the author of You Look Like a Thing and I Love You: How AI Works, Thinks, and Why It’s Making the World a Weirder Place, published in 2019, which uses cartoons and pop-culture experiments to make AI and machine learning accessible and entertaining. Her blog, AIweirdness.com, provides a humorous look at AI.
She works as a research scientist in Boulder, Colorado, where she makes computer-controlled holograms for studying the brain, in addition to other light-steering devices.
Shane has been featured on the main TED stage; in the New York Times, The Atlantic, WIRED, and Popular Science; and on public radio programs All Things Considered, Science Friday, and Marketplace. She was named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business and an Adweek Young Influential. In 2022 she became the Smithsonian’s first Futurist in Residence.
