The Rise of New Nuclear Generation Exemplified by SMR-300

Abstract

Kris Singh will provide a brief introduction to Holtec International, to the Company’s SMR-300 reactor and its renewable energy technologies that complement SMR-300 broadening its range of industrial applications besides producing electrical power.

He will discuss the evolving nuclear renaissance which is fueled by a new generation of reactors typified by SMR-300 which is equipped with features that ensure a very high level of protection against extreme environmental phenomena or human performance errors. Such SMRs are designed to be compact in size and usually do not need an exclusion zone around them. Holtec International’s flagship SMR-300 is one such reactor whose international variation is actively competing in the emerging global race with nuclear exporter countries, such as Russia and China.

In this colloquium, Singh will describe the essential attributes of SMR-300 and its design features that render it into what is euphemistically called “unconditionally safe.” He will speak to SMR-300s centrality in Holtec’s clean energy ecosystem and its natural role in cogeneration and distributed generation applications.

He will also explain the measures that are being developed by our national labs, notably the Idaho National Lab, to help update the federal codes that have contributed to the high per KW cost of nuclear plants without adding to the plant’s safety metrics.

Biography

Founder, President, and CEO of Holtec International Kris Singh nurtured his business into a multi-national company after establishing it in 1986. He is also a Professor at the University of South Florida’s Institute for Advanced Discovery and Innovation where he collaborates with the USF faculty in the areas of advanced thermal storage and efficient harnessing of solar energy.

Singh received his PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (1972), a Master of Science in engineering mechanics also from Penn (1969), and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from BIT Sindri (Ranchi University), India (1967).
