Abstract

The Office of Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, supports the discovery, development, and translation of research and creative activities. As a key component of the research ecosystem at UT, we also support the professional development of our scientists and scholars. With a range of activities from proposal development to industry and community engagement, our mission is guided by the principle that research and communication are held at the highest of standards. To ensure the integrity of our mission and our colleagues, we consider the Responsible Conduct of Research to be a key pillar of our research communities. This short presentation will be a conversation: To ensure that we all feel comfortable with the conversation of rigor, integrity, and the assurance that UT stands above all as a place of cutting edge research and scholarship

Bio

Brad Day, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research Innovation Initiatives at UT joined the university in November 2021. He is responsible for the development of new, cross-disciplinary research activities that capture the strengths and opportunities of faculty at UT. Importantly, in this role, he is focusing on convergence research activities to eliminate traditionally siloed disciplinary-focused research and innovation.

Prior to joining UT in 2021, Day was a Foundation Professor at Michigan State University (MSU) where his research focused on the molecular-genetic regulation of plant immune signaling. His research was funded by a breadth of national and international funding agencies, including NSF, USDA, NIH, TUBITAK (Turkey), Asian Development Bank, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. As a faculty member, Day's research—and impact in international engagement—focused on biotechnology applications for the environment and agriculture. With more than 50 international scholars mentored during his 15-year career at MSU, his commitment to ensuring access to resources, training, and opportunities—regardless of place—drives his mission as an innovation thought leader, not only in agriculture and biotechnology, but across the higher education landscape.

In 2020, Day spent 1 year as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation. Prior to MSU, he was a NIH-funded postdoctoral scholar at UC-Berkeley and an NSF-postdoc at the National Institute of Agroenvironmental Resources in Japan.

He holds a PhD and BS in microbiology from UT.
