NE Colloquium. Jacob Shamblin - Commissioning the SC360 Proton Therapy System: An Introduction into Pencil Beam Scanning
Proton therapy is a rapidly expanding modality for cancer treatment with radiation therapy. This is thanks due to advancements in dose delivery techniques as well as increased access to proton therapy systems worldwide. The ProNova SC360 is a multi-room proton therapy system utilizing permanent and superconducting magnets to reduce cost and size. The SC360 utilizes a technique known as Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) in all of its treatment rooms. The SC360 fixed beam treatment rooms at the Provision CARES Proton Therapy Centers in Knoxville and Nashville have been calibrated to meet or exceed clinical performance of existing proton therapy systems. An overview of commissioning this system for clinical use will be given along with an introduction into the Pencil Beam Scanning technique.
