PEN America: Faculty Workshop

Provost & Senior Vice Chancellor David Manderscheid and Vice Chancellor for Diversity & Engagement Tyvi Small present two days of programming with PEN America on campus on October 2 and 3.

“Whose Freedom, Whose Speech? A Workshop on Free Speech and Inclusion on Campus” is a two-hour workshop facilitated by Dr. Jonathan Friedman and Nora Benavidez and will equip UT faculty with a foundational understanding of key challenges at the intersection of free speech and inclusion on campus. The interactive session will explore how faculty can respond to scenarios concerning academic freedom, external speakers, hateful speech, social media, and the classroom environment. Additionally, PEN America facilitators will cover the fundamental precepts of the First Amendment and its application to the regulation of speech on campus, as well as the tools and resources available on PEN America’s online Campus Free Speech Guide.
