Ready for the World Music Series

The Ready for the World Music Series is excited to announce that we are back in person on Sunday, March 20, 2022 and will be featuring the Grammy-winning Harlem String Quartet in a program show works by Afro-Caribbean composers. First-place laureates of the National Sphinx Competition in 2006, the Harlem String Quartet recently performed as an ensemble with the New York Philharmonic. The Harlem Quartet advances diversity in classical music while engaging new audiences with varied repertoire that includes works by minority composers. Their mission to share their passion with a wider audience has taken them around the world; from a 2009 performance at The White House for President Obama and First Lady, Michelle Obama, to a highly successful tour of South Africa in 2012, and numerous venues in between. The musically versatile ensemble has performed with such distinguished artists as Itzhak Perlman, Ida Kavafian, Carter Brey, Fred Sherry, Misha Dichter, Jeremy Denk, and Paquito D’Rivera. More information about the Harlem Quartet can be found on their website: http://harlemquartet.com.

For this program, the doors of UT’s Natalie L. Haslam Music Center will open at 12:30pm, where cultural displays will be presented. A short lecture and recital will begin at 2pm and will feature performances of works and a brief lecture about the composers from this region. The objective for each program is to create a holistic cultural experience for the audiences comprised of faculty, students, and members of the community. By the program, the audience will have gained a greater awareness and appreciation for the artistic and scholarly contributions this cultural group has made to their communities.
