GEOTECH/STRUCT/MAT/CONST Seminar: Issam E. Harik
Title: "Deployment of FRP Composites in New and Existing Structures"
Issam E. Harik is the Raymond-Blythe Professor of Civil Engineering and Manager of the Structures Program at the Kentucky Transportation Center, University of Kentucky.
Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites have become part of the civil engineering construction materials ranging from rehabilitation of existing structures to new structures. The presentation focuses on FRP deployment by Harik’s team on more than fifty bridges. The advantages and limitations of the different externally bonded FRP systems will be detailed along with what makes a successful FRP deployment. The primary advantage retrofitting with FRP is the economical and effective life extension of structures with minimal impact to the traveling public. The presentation will conclude with current and future trends in FRP research and development as it relates to retrofit of structures.
Harik is the Raymond-Blythe Professor of Civil Engineering and Manager of the Structures Program at the Kentucky Transportation Center, University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. His research interests are in the areas of FRP components and structures, and structural evaluation and retrofit of bridges.
