The short story contest was created as a way to inspire students, faculty, and staff to write creatively. This is also a way for the library to support those who wish to participate in National Novel Writing Month. Those who participate in the short story contest are given a choice of prompts they must use to create a unique and imaginative story. The stories are then sent off to a set of judges who read each story and score them based on a set of criteria. The stories are also featured in the library's publication Speaking Volumes.

This event has a write-in kick off starting on Wednesday November 8th starting at 5pm in Hodges room 258 (Mary Greer Room). Participants in the kick-off event will have first access to the writing prompts, snacks, drinks, and the ability to talk through their stories with wonderful tutors in the creative writing program provided by the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center.

After the kick-off, students will have one week to write and turn in their stories to be sent to a set of judges who will read over their stories and pick our winners. The due date for these stories will be Wednesday November 15th by 11:59pm.
