The SKYWARN® class is free but registration is required. The class will be held in THE CITY ROOM at the Roane State Oak Ridge Campus. The City Room is on the first floor of the Coffey/McNally Building ( Parking Available in LOT A )We have already had extreme weather in 2024! As part of Tennessee’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week (February 19-25) the UT Arboretum Society is sponsoring this free SKYWARN® training on Tuesday, February 20th, 6-8pm in the City Room at the Roane State Oak Ridge Campus. In Tennessee this year we have already experienced tornadoes, drought, flooding and other severe weather. In most years, thunderstorms, tornadoes and lightning cause hundreds of injuries and deaths and billions in property and crop damages. To obtain critical weather information, the National Weather Service (NWS) established SKYWARN® with partner organizations. SKYWARN® is a volunteer program with between 350,000 and 400,000 trained severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. Class participants will learn basic knowledge of storm structure, associated hazards, and safety as well as making real-time, accurate reports to the National Weather Service. Please note: this is not a storm chasing class.
