Speaker: Dr. Drew Lewis (University of South Alabama)
Abstract: Inquiry-Based Learning is a pedagogy in which students engage in rich mathematical tasks to explore the material. It is most commonly used in upper level math courses, and has widely been found to have positive effects on student learning. Team-Based Inquiry Learning was designed to facilitate the implementation of inquiry tasks in lower division courses. We will describe the overall structure of TBIL, and how it is implemented in courses such as calculus and linear algebra. We will also describe some of the research we have conducted into its benefits, such as increased content knowledge as well improved procedural flexibility.
