The Art of Public Deliberation

Session Presenters: Sharyl Loeung & Josh Ritter (Kardiahouse Co-Founders)

Session Description: Join us for a virtual session for staff on building civic capacity across campus. Public deliberation (PD) is a value-based approach to facilitating difficult conversations about tough topics that invites many perspectives to the table instead of promoting only one or two dominant voices. PD invites everyone to bring their convictions to the table and not leave their identities at the door because PD is about addressing the root of our communal, adaptive problems together (shared values) in a brave space of mutual respect, humility, equity, and understanding.

As a result of attending this session, participants will:

  • Understand the Basic Principles of the PD model
  • Become familiar with the structure and format of a PD forum
  • Explore the Ground Rules of the PD model
  • Identify the role of value hierarchy in deliberation
