The Light Show in the Smokies

Visit the Elkmont area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the evening to learn about the history of the area and the natural cycle of the synchronous fireflies.

Until recently, this unbelievable natural phenomenon was unknown but now has become a very popular destination at this time of year.

Instructor Wanda DeWaard will discuss the history of these amazing creatures along with synchrony in nature and bioluminescence, of which we’ll see examples.

By the end of the evening you’ll understand the story of the synchronous firefly and know of many other glowing and blinking creatures to look for on a night exploration.

This non-credit course is offered by the Smoky Mountain Field School, an educational partnership between UT Conferences & Non-Credit Programs and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
