Canceled: Why Don't Sports Media Treat Women Fairly?
Due to recent news from the UT administration, we are cancelling this event.
Erin Whiteside, associate professor in the UT School of Journalism and Electronic Media, will present “Why Don't Sports Media Treat Women Fairly?” Friday, March 27.
When Megan Rapinoe led the US women's national team to the World Cup title last summer, media outlets ranging from ESPN to the Knoxville News Sentinel highlighted the team's triumphs. That moment of heightened media visibility for women's sports, however, was an anomaly, and female athletes and related issues like Title IX continue to face challenges in securing credible, fair, and just sports media coverage. Whiteside will trace some of the key ways in which sports media cover female athletes and the national gender equity law known as Title IX, and where and how those trends are both changing — and remaining stubbornly in place.
The UT Science Forum takes place Fridays from noon to 1 p.m. in the Thompson-Boling Arena Cafe (located at 1600 Phillip Fulmer Way), Room A. Guests are encouraged to bring their lunch or purchase it from the arena. Each presentation is followed by a Q&A.
The event is free and open to the public. We have temporary parking passes available for our guests who do not have UT parking passes. An RSVP is required for the pass. To request a pass, please visit us online at scienceforum.utk.edu.
