The first phase of the Student Union, which opened in 2015, houses dining, the VolShop, VolTech, and VolBooks, and the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration. Beside the Student Union, the Johnson Ward Pedestrian Walkway connects to the Hill, the adjacent Blueberry Falls greenway, and an outdoor plaza and courtyard.
