Jul 18, 2026: Free 3rd Saturday Gardening Class: All About Roses at UT/TSU Extension Office

This free community event is offered monthly by the Master Gardeners of Hamilton County.

This month, the class will begin at the beginning, with a brief look at the history of the rose, reaching back to what we know of its importance in ancient times, and continuing forward with a discussion of the evolution of hybridizing, and the creation of the modern rose that fills our gardens today. The class will also cover the various types of roses and their characteristics, and practical tips for selecting the perfect rose for your setting, and planting it so it will thrive.

Master Gardener Susan Speraw will be the presenter this month. Susan is an avid gardener and has been growing roses for over thirty years, first in California, and more recently in East Tennessee. Her rose garden on Signal Mountain contains over 40 different roses. In addition to Master Gardeners, Susan is a member of the Tri-State Rose Society of Chattanooga.

Space is limited and registration is required. Sign up early as these classes can fill up fast!

How should teaching and learning evolve in the age of generative AI? This interactive workshop introduces IDEA (Instructional Design for AI Era Learning), a new framework for analyzing and redesigning course activities and assessments to preserve meaningful thinking, reasoning, productive struggle, and authentic learning in AI rich educational environments.

Participants will explore the theoretical foundations of the IDEA framework, experience a live demonstration of a custom AI powered IDEA agent in ChatGPT, and analyze their own course activities and assessments using the tool.

First meeting of the 2026-2027 Robotics Club season. Hamilton County youth in grades 9th through 12th with an interest in robotics are invited to attend to learn more about the 4-H robotics program. The 4-H Robotics Club competes in FIRST Tech Challenge robotics as the 4-H Gear Grinders team. The club members meet weekly from mid-August through February or March, depending on competition dates, and with breaks for holidays. They design, build, program, and test a robot to prepare for competition.

Hamilton County 4-H Archery Club Preview Day is Saturday, August 15 from 1 pm - 3 pm.

All Hamilton County youth in grades 4th-12th are invited to come try out a bow and learn more about the 4-H Archery program. Attending Preview Day is required for new members of the 4-H Archery Club.

There is no cost to attend Preview Day, but advance registration is required and a completed 600A medical form (4-H Health Form) must be submitted. Deadline to register and submit health form is August 7. Parents/guardians do need to stay at the event with their children - bring a camp chair or blanket.

Registration for the 4-H Archery Club for the 2026-2027 season will begin after Preview Day. For more information, email HamiltonCounty4H@tennessee.edu
